Greener Than You Think
Are you a good steward of the earth? How much do you contribute to reducing your use of natural resources? I am not trying to put a guilt trip on you, just make you stop and think. If someone were to ask me, how green are you? I would stop and think and just say that I tried. But when I stopped to really look at being a good steward , I am greener that I thought.
Recycling trash at the curb. Our family has done that for a long time and by my standard, that is just expected of everyone. Just add another trash can in the kitchen or wherever for the recycling. Make it as easy as possible so you will do it regularly.
Cans and bottles can be redeemed for cash in many states. You are lucky if that is your state. It is worth the inconvenience if you are getting cash back.
Using cloth napkins and extra cloth dishtowels not only save you money, but cut your trash down significantly. Once you get used to doing this, you really enjoy the luxurious feel of fabric instead of paper. Keep a basket out to make using cloth napkins convenient and have enough towels so you don’t constantly run out. I keep paper towels for greasy and super yucky stuff that gets thrown away.
Green bags for groceries are very popular now. They are on sale everywhere. The key here is to have enough bags so you have a stache of them in the car for when you leave the last ones used in the house. I am getting better at putting them back in the car now that I have been doing this for several years.
Our on-going green work is in the area of medicine, beauty and cleaning products. It is not something you can do all at once and make it a permanent change. With lots of allergies in our family, we not only illuminate the allergens, but we try to have as few ingredients as possible in our food, medicine, cleaners and beauty products. Try dealing with one at a time. Sometimes you can even make your own. This is very time consuming. So, make one healthy choice at a time so you will stick with it.
One you may have not thought of is incontinent pads. My mother, daughter and I were all using them, and the cost was mounting up. I found some flannel ones online, and made my own pattern. I made enough for all three of us to go one week before washing. It has been great!
I guess upon further evaluation, I am greener that I thought. I am not near as green as I would like to be, but I am going to keep moving forward one green choice at a time. My next step is going to switch over packet refills of laundry products to go in one set of original bottles. Minus the extra chemicals and plastic bottles, we are really decreasing our footprint. If everyone will make one more green decision, what a huge step forward in good stewardship of the earth.
